Enrollment Process:
We’re thrilled you’re intersted in classes at Haywood Haven. We are a Christian collaborative education program. Our educators partner with families in educating their students. Our class days are broken into blocks. Blocking classes allows teachers to customize instruction time and focus as dictated by what is being taught on each day. You can sign up for individual blocks or a full day. The process for enrollment is:

Reading and Writing
We use Wilson Reading System®, a multisensory, structured language programs, to provide research-based materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwriting program.
Kindergarten
Students will build basic developmental, social and class behavior skills to prepare for 1st grade. Reading will be taught by the multi sensory and systematic phonics Fundations program designed for Kindergarten – 3rd grade.
This includes lessons that teach and reinforce corresponding skills sequentially and systematically to:
- learn upper and lower case letter recognition, sound mastery, segmenting words into syllables, and beginning/middle/end sounds
- recognize and produce rhyming words, pronounce the structure of CVC words, distinguish long and short vowels, and learn trick words
- master decoding and develop word fluency and comprehension strategies
- practice letter formation through journaling, vocabulary, spelling, and creating longer words and sentences
1st and 2nd
Students will learn the fundamentals of reading. Individual assistance for specific skills will be given during small group sessions. Whole group reading will include a read aloud, explicit phonics, fluency, and comprehension instruction. Small reading groups will target individual reading levels. We will build classroom community through sharing, cooperative learning, and friendship.
Wilson Fundations makes learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for life-long literacy including:
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonics/ word study
- High frequency word study
- Reading fluency
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension strategies
Materials Needed:

Math
Assessments will be given to determine placement. Students will learn:
- number recognition, counting and writing to 20 and beyond
- simple addition and subtraction solving, practice counting by 2’s to 20, and by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s to 100
- money recognition and value of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters will be taught
- telling time by the hour, knowing shapes and sorting shapes.

Language Arts
Children will need an adult to guide them through their language arts lessons on days they are at home. Please plan to spend up to 45 minutes a day on home days working with your child on language arts.

Math
Using classical education strategies, we’ll help students learn math concepts and succeed at their own pace. The approach integrates a distinctive set of manipulatives with strategies presented through lesson-by-lesson videos, textbooks, and digital resources. The first level of this math class focuses on single-digit facts and multiple-digit multiplication skills. The second level teaches single-digit division facts and the concepts of division and place value are applied when solving long division problems.
All students will take an assessment for placement.

Our PE classes will integrate and extend the lessons we’re learning in Anatomy. Classes will include:
- Free play
- organized games (kickball, capture the flag, soccer, etc.)
- athletic drills (running, jumping rope, etc.)
- fun playing outside and working as a team with their friends in an energetic environment that will get the wiggles out and keep their bodies active and healthy!

History/Science (Outdoor Exploration)
We’re so blessed to have a campus with multiple outdoor learning spaces and 4 acres of land. Time in nature is vital to children’s mental and emotional health, and we love to give our kiddos learning experiences outside the walls of a classroom.
Medieval History:
Using The Story of the World Volume II as an anchor and read-aloud, students will learn about Medieval History. This class is hands-on, project-based, and experiential. Students love this time period because it focuses on knights, ladies, and castles. We’ll explore the significant events of the time and integrate lots of crafts, music, cooking, and play!

Anatomy:
In Science, we’ll study Anatomy by introducing students to God’s design for their bodies and his divine purpose. The human body is an incredibly complex wonder, created by God! Learn about the amazing functions of each system of our bodies. As children learn about human anatomy, they will understand that they are created in God’s image. The hands-on activities make learning about the human body fun, and the focus on biblical creation will help establish your student in their faith. Get ready for adventure as you discover the human body!

Language Arts
Middle school students are maturing in their language arts skills. Passages from great literature encourage the reading of timeless classics. Dictation encourages expressive, creative writing. The study of suffixes and prefixes lays groundwork for skills needed at upper grade levels.
Skills developed include:
- grammar mastery
- sentence structure
- sentence diagramming using classical literature for the middle school
- memorizing, recitating, and analyzing various poems
- analyzing the elements of a story, develop a plot line, write dialogue and much more through studying short stories
- research techniques
- spelling
- higher-order thinking and study skills.

Math

Beginning with the fall of the Roman Empire, and covering the rise of Islam, medieval Chinese history, the Gupta and Mughal dynasties of India, the Vikings, the Ottoman Empire and the Americas during the Middle Ages, we’ll discuss history and how the Middle Ages set the stage for the world we live in now. Christian The curriculum is written from a Christian perspective.

Beginning with the fall of the Roman Empire, and covering the rise of Islam, medieval Chinese history, the Gupta and Mughal dynasties of India, the Vikings, the Ottoman Empire and the Americas during the Middle Ages, we’ll discuss history and how the Middle Ages set the stage for the world we live in now. PE:
Our PE classes will integrate and extend the lessons we’re learning in Anatomy. Classes will include:
- Free play
- organized games (kickball, capture the flag, soccer, etc.)
- athletic drills (running, jumping rope, etc.)
- fun playing outside and working as a team with their friends in an energetic environment that will get the wiggles out and keep their bodies active and healthy!
Please make sure to send your student dressed in clothing and shoes that allow them to be active.
Lunch:
Lunch is a time for students to get to know each other and build community. Make sure to pack your kiddo a nutritious lunch to fuel them for some serious fun and learning during our afternoon session!

Language Arts
Using various approaches, we’ll cover topics including:
- spelling
- grammar
- parts of speech
- dictation
- diagramming

Math
During this math period, pre-Algebra and Algebra will be taught to individual groups. Students will be assigned to a level based on their assessment results.
Category Description:
Covers fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, area, volume, ratio, proportion, exponents, scientific notation, signed numbers, algebraic terms, 2-step equations and inequalities, slope, graphing, the Pythagorean Theorem.

Assisted Learning
This is for our Tuesday/Thursday students to work on their assignments. Mrs. Julie will work with children individually to make sure they have mastered the concepts from the previous day.
Learning Centers
Our K-2 classroom is a fun, colorful, engaging space. We have many hands-on learning centers for the students to explore in order to extend and deepen their learning.

Math Lab
Math concepts need to be experienced to be mastered. Our Tuesday and Thursday math classes teach the principles students need to learn. Our Math Lab provides them hands-on experiences and practices where they’ll use those math concepts to complete tasks and projects.
Writing Lab
Our Writing Lab gives students the opportunity to hone their individual writing skills and style through creative and academic writing practices. They’ll write skits, poems, music, dialogues, research reports, and more in a fun, engaging class dynamic.
